Living Our Own Life

I know we aren't suppose to allow the actions of our children to dictate our reactions and what type of moods it puts on us but this weekend I am going to throw that out the window.

Two daughters, one graduating with her Masters Degree on Sunday from KU. The other one is nothing short of an amazing mother to our granddaughter.

A son that is being released on Tuesday that is a pleasure to be around. Nothing less that an miraculous change from less than one year ago.

Dad and Mom are proud parents of three great children and son/daughter in-laws.

we are men...not robots..we take joy in our kid's goodtimes..and sorrow when the disease has them "trapped" ...

it is OK to have happiness...it's those who become codependent when the child is sick..that need to reflect and try to change

Go have fun!

I am new at this blogging and I came across this website by accident, but nothing is by accident and i think (I fear) I may need it more than I know. i found a package in my son's pocket that he claims is to help with overcoming oxycodein, helps take the edge off of not using. He claims he is not addicted and that he only took this because a friend gave it to him. I have an idea that this is a problem and I don't know what to do first. He does not have the usual signs that are listed on the web, he has admitted that he has taken the drug, I don't want to flip out but I don't know what to do. Please help.

Maureen,

The important thing is not to panic but to become educated. I would tell you that if your son is using you can't believe a thing he says. Investigate, what was in the package you found. If it is something to help him get off opiates it may be suboxone. Suboxone has a street value for addicts so just because someone has it doesn't mean they are trying to detox and get off other drugs.

There are what they call "functioning" addicts but there are things that happen that cannot be faked.

It's time to confront, get the facts and deal with what is vs what ought to be.

I don't know what else to say right now and you didn't mention your son's age and that does make a big difference. If you have other question please do not hesitate to e-mail me. Plus be sure to look at the blogs from other parents. Plus I would recommend looking at www.drugfree.org . There are tons of good credible resources at that site for dealing with children using or experimenting with drugs.

Maureen, I don't think it was an accident at all that you found this blog!!!! Dad has excellent insight and knowledge on this and many of us (other bloggers that you can find in his blog list) are also here to help you through this. Don't try to wade through these dark waters alone, we all need all the help we can get, especially at the beginning!
